Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, has assured that the government will continue doing everything possible to ensure food security in the country.
Mrs Nalumango says the government has a responsibility to look after its people, adding that it will continue implementing strict interventions that will address challenges of food security in the country.
The Vice President observes that much as the country has experienced sufficient rainfall, the government is cognisant that some areas had flash floods.
She notes that a vulnerability assessment is being conducted in order to ascertain the situation.
Mrs Namulungo adds that the government will continue to support people that are genuinely affected with food insecurities whether caused by drought or by other calamities.
ZANIS reports that the Vice President said this today in Parliament during the Vice President’s Question Time and Answer Session where Sinazongwe Member of Parliament, Gift Sialubalo, wanted to know what interventions government has put in place to protect farmers that have experienced flash floods this farming season.
“Thank you so much for this important question and I must state that the government has and will continue conducting assessments in such areas that are affected by drought and other calamities so that our people are provided with food and other necessities. So, honorable Member for Sinanzongwe, be assured that the government is prepared for this.” she said.
And Mr Sialubalo has commended the government for coming up with different programmes such as Cash for Work which he said has helped people in his constituency that were affected by last years’ drought.
He remains optimistic that with the flash floods that have affected some parts of his constituency, the government will once again come to the aid of not only his people but also other areas.
“Madam, I must commend the government for these programmes that have helped my people overcome the drought that affected us all. Without the government’s help, I do not know how we were going to survive. Am also positive that even with these flash floods we are experiencing you will still come to our aid,” he said.
And Mrs Nalumango has also assured the country that the government will continue to intensify its efforts in the fight against corruption.
She says the government will not relent in fighting corruption as it has potential to derail the country’s development.
Mrs Nalumago was responding to the question by Nkana Member of Parliament, Binwell Mpundu, who wanted to know what interventions government has put in place in the fight against corruption.
“As government we will not relent to fight corruption and I will once again assure the Zambian people that this government will double its efforts in the fight against corruption,” she said.
