About 200 hectares of maize and soya beans affecting 50 farmers in Shibuyunji’s Chikonka ward have been washed away following heavy rains.
District Commissioner Alfred Shaputu says the crops which were about to mature in Chikonka ward have been destroyed leaving the affected farmers in need.
Mr Shaputu stated in an interview with ZANIS in Kabwe that officers from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) are assessing the situation to determine the extent of damage to see how the government can intervene.
“Perhaps they would need to be assisted with early mature seed of crops such as sorghum,” said Mr Shaputu.
The District Commissioner also highlighted that the continuous heavy rains have also led to the degradation of roads in the district.
“This is so especially for the stretch from Nampudwe to Shikatende, I’m afraid some of the roads are becoming impassable,” he stated.
