The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 89 licenses and 8 construction permits, totaling a combined investment of US$381.4 million, equivalent to K10.9 billion.
Speaking during a media breakfast in Lusaka today, ERB Director General Elijah Sichone, in a speech read on his behalf by Director Corporate and Consumer Affairs Mwiika Malindima, said the approved licenses cover critical activities.
ZANIS reports that Mr Sichone stated that the approved licenses will help address the retail of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the supply and installation of solar energy equipment, and the transportation, importation, and retail of petroleum products.
Mr Sichone emphasized ERB’s commitment to transparency, accuracy, and proactive engagement in the regulation of Zambia’s energy sector.
“Our work is not just about regulation, but about empowering citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. The media is central to this mission, acting as a conduit for accurate and timely information,” he said.
He also acknowledged the media’s pivotal role in bridging the gap between the public and regulatory bodies, ensuring that citizens remain well-informed about critical energy policies, decisions, and developments.
And ERB Public Relations Manager Namukolo Kasumpa disclosed that among the approved projects is a 50 MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant located at Baluba Maposa in Luanshya District, which will contribute to Zambia’s growing solar capacity.
Ms Kasumpa also mentioned other critical developments, such as the construction of a 330 kV transmission line from the Lusaka West Substation to the Kabwe Step-down Substation, facilitated by ZESCO Limited.
“These approved projects represent a major step forward in achieving our national objectives of diversifying the energy mix and tackling energy challenges,” she said.
