ONE CHOLERA CASE RECORDED IN THE LAST 24 HOURS

Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded one new cholera case from Chililabombwe bringing the cumulative number of cases to 301, Minister of Health Elijah Muchima has announced.

And Dr Muchima has announced that no new death has been recorded in the country during the last 24 hours, stating that the country remains at nine deaths cumulatively with seven of them being community deaths and brought in dead.

ZANIS reports that the Minister further indicated that three people have recovered from cholera in the last 24 hours, bringing the total recoveries to 289 since the outbreak.

“Currently three patients are receiving treatment in cholera treatment centers,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Dr Muchima disclosed that on January 26, 2025, the Kanyama Rapid Response Team received two female patients aged 54 and 32 from Kanyama West Health Facility presenting with symptoms suggestive of cholera.

He said the two patients were treated at Kanyama cholera treatment centre and discharged on February 28, 2025.

“Our further surveillance work has revealed that a nine year old girl from the same household had also died from similar symptoms and the body was taken to the UTH mortuary by the family,” Dr Muchima indicated.

He added that the Ministry of Health is following up on the results of the deceased child as tests have been done on the body.

The Minister, however, indicated that successful vaccination campaigns in Nakonde, Chililabombwe and now Kitwe have significantly contributed to the reduction in cases being reported in the named communities and has also reduced the severity of cholera cases being recorded.
