ZCSA clamps down non-compliant packaged water

Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has confiscated over 1000 cases of non-compliant packaged water valued at over K84,000.

ZCSA Head of Communications, Brian Hatyoka says the seizure took place in various townships in Lusaka which include Chipata, Emmasdale and Industrial Area among others.

Speaking during a press briefing in Livingstone, Mr Hatyoka said the operation, which spanned from March 13 to 15, 2024, is part of ZCSA’s heightened market surveillance efforts to eliminate the illegal sale of products that fail to meet compulsory standards.

He noted that the affected suppliers and manufacturers are reportedly taking steps to regularize their product licensing as per the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017.

“Ensuring that only safe products reach consumers is our top priority, unlicensed products not only violate regulations but also pose significant health risks,” he said.

Mr Hatyoka stated that ZCSA’s mandate extends to both imported and locally produced goods, with a particular focus on ensuring that packaged water meets the Zambian Standard for Bottled Water ZS 388: Bottled Drinking Water – Specification.

He further urged manufacturers to adhere to the ZS 388 standard and seek the Agency’s authorization before market distribution.

“Our commitment to consumer safety is unwavering, and we will continue to intensify our enforcement activities across all regulated products,” he stated.

Mr Hatyoka said ZCSA currently oversees the regulation of 61 products, ranging from food and beverages to household electrical appliances, under the scope of compulsory standards.
