Moving coffin sets off Mushindamo residents

Police in Mushindamo district have dispersed a mob after a moving coffin locally known as “Chikondo” sparked tension, following the sudden death of a man who was a trader at Kasapa market.

The Chikondo started after the body of the deceased was being taken to a local church for a requiem service when pallbearers started being controlled by the coffin.

The mob then started following the coffin in search of the suspected killer in the community.

ZANIS reports that Mushindamo District Commissioner Andrew Kalangwa has expressed sadness at the development.

Mr Kalangwa said “Chikondo” is retrogressive and must not be entertained in the community.

He added that death is a normal occurrence and families are encouraged to make use of post mortem, should they suspect foul play after the death of a loved one.

The District Commissioner explained that police were called to restore order at the funeral after a mob started searching for the suspected witch.

He said police quickly dispersed the mob and took the body to Solwezi general hospital mortuary.

Mr Kalangwa has cautioned mourners against inciting violence in the community, while thanking the police for their timely response in the matter.
