MAGUMWI Ward Councillor Fine Sankondo has appealed for more support to complete construction of Kejaya water dam in Mwandi District in Western Province that will help people and animals in the community during the dry season.
Mr Sankondo, who is also Mwandi Town Council Vice Chairperson, has called on the local authority in Mwandi district to consider allocating more beneficiaries in the third phase of the cash for work programme to finish the dam construction that started in the first phase.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS on Thursday, Mr Sankondo said the water dam initiative is a decision made by the ward development committee, satellite disaster management committee and other stakeholders after identifying the need for fresh water nearby.
“People and animals walk about seven kilometres to find water which implies that animals walk about four to six hours without grazing resulting in death.
“After much consideration, we realised we have a dambo area of which when deepened can accommodate a good quantity of water to help during our dry season,” he said.
Mwandi Town Council Director Human Resource Assistant, Noah Noah, who is also the Cash for Work Programme Coordinator, has assured the people that recommendations will be made to management for the completion of the water dam project in Magumwi ward after receiving the third phase allocation of funds.
Mr Noah stated that once completed the dam will have a positive impact on the Magumwi community and surrounding areas.
