KASAMA Central Agriculture Block Supervisor Cleophasio Maini says there are a number of things to put in place in order for farmers to achieve increased crop production.
Mr Maini says farmers should ensure that they plant quality seeds if they are to increase crop production further advising farmers to be careful in the selection of seeds as some unscrupulous people are in the habit of selling fake seeds.
He explained that some farmers produce more crops because they pay particular attention to the crop variety which they plant.
“You see that a farm next to yours produces more crops on a land which is equivalent to yours but you produce less, this is because the quality of crops is dependent on the variety of seeds which you plant,” he explained.
Mr Maini also encouraged farmers to ensure that they cultivate their farmland in good time as this equally has a direct effect on crop production.
“You must ensure that your farms are cultivated in good time, this will in turn ensure that you plant your crops in good time, this is another factor which will contribute to increased crop production,” he said.
“If you delay to cultivate, planting will also be delayed and this will affect the production of your crops,” he said.
He further reminded farmers to ensure that they apply chemicals on time to prevent diseases from affecting their crops.
He explained that following simple procedures in farming has a positive impact on crop production.
