Western water given ultimatum to repair non functioning boreholes

Kaoma District Epidemic Preparedness Taskforce has given Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company  a two days ultimatum to repair all non-functional water boreholes following an escalating confirmed cholera cases in the district. 

The committee composed of all government departments, non-governmental, faith based organisations and the community leadership converged for an emergency meeting today to explore ways of containing the cholera outbreak in the district. 

The meeting was chaired by Kaoma District Health Director, Idi Mwinyi who called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders if the fight against the disease is to be won.

Dr. Mwinyi disclosed that Kaoma has so far recorded 6 confirmed cases from the time the disease broke out three weeks ago out of which four have been discharged.

“We have received two more confirmed cholera cases bringing the number to six, four have been discharged and two are still under our custody at Kazabami mini hospital which is our epidemic centre,” he said.

During the emergency stakeholders meeting, it was resolved that Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company should expedite repair works on all non-functioning boreholes for the district to have clean running water throughout.

Stakeholders further requested the utility company to also work on water pipe leakages and report back to the committee. 

Other stakeholders like the local authority pledged to ensure that all public institutions are disinfected while the ministry of health and education assured residents of doing their part according to their jurisdiction before schools open.

So far four districts in Western Province namely, Kaoma, Luampa, Nkeyema and Monga have recorded cholera cases.
