Council cautions use of chemicals to preserve meat products

Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba says the council is investigating the alleged use of unknown chemicals to preserve meat products amidst load shedding.

Ms Chola said reports of such acts are alarming and has raised concerns on the safety and quality of meat products being sold to consumers.

She stated that the council has launched an investigation into the matter to ensure that the health and well-being of the residents is safeguarded.

“We have received media reports of certain butcheries within the city allegedly using unknown chemicals to preserve their meat products amidst the prolonged hours of load shedding,” said.

She added that the local authority will enhance sampling of the meat products for chemical analysis.

“We strongly urge all butchery owners and operators to adhere to the regulations set forth by the City Council and to prioritize the safety of their customers. The use of any unauthorized chemicals or substances in the preservation of meat products is not only illegal but also poses a serious risk to public health,” he said.

She further said consumers should be alert and cautious when purchasing meat products from local butcheries.

“If you suspect any irregularities or have concerns about the quality of meat being sold, please report to LCC immediately,” she said.

Ms. Chola further said the local authority is committed to working closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to address issue effectively.

“We will not tolerate any actions that compromise the safety and well-being of our residents,” she said.
