ERB commends Copperbelt Energy Corporation for Solar

Energy Regulation Board Acting Copperbelt Senior Manager, Ezra Siamasuma, has commended Copperbelt Energy Corporation for having plans of constructing another Solar energy plant that will help enhance the supply of power in the country.

Mr Siamasuma says solar plants are efficient in providing power supply to people and are resilient to climate change hence the need for more stakeholders to invest in the energy sector.

ZANIS reports that Mr Siamasuma said this during a media tour at the 60 mega watts solar PV plant in itimpi area in Kitwe district.

He said ERB plays a significant role in promoting investment into the Energy sector in the country, adding that it is the government policy to increase diversification in the sector.

“This kind of power plant which is greener means that we can have a more diverse energy sector which is resilient in energy generation, and effects of climate change,” he said.

He added that the 60 megawatts solar plant is a milestone that will help alleviate the load management that the country is currently facing.

He has since encouraged other stakeholders to come in and invest into solar plants so that we can have an energy sector that is more resistant to climate change.

Government is working around setting up policies that will ensure the pricing regulations are conducive for investors.

Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) Acting Chief Finance Officer Lizzie Muwowo said the company decided to enter into solar business in 2015 and has since set up a 60 mega watts solar plant at itimpi area and a 34 megawatts solar plant in Riverside Kitwe districts.

Ms Muwowo said the company is planning to set up another bigger solar plant that will be financed from the 200 million United States dollars which was raised from the Green bond.

She added that the current solar plants have been providing energy for the people within the region and in the neighbouring countries.

She applauded the Energy Regulation Board for being a supportive regulator adding that they have been available during the construction of the two solar plants.
