Stakeholders commend Cholera fight

Various stakeholders have commended Zambia for the resilience fight against the cholera outbreak.

In an interview with ZANIS, World Health Organisation Country Representative, Nathan Bakyaiya stated that through the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema a multisectoral approach was implemented.

Dr Bakyaita said that this has seen a great reduction in numbers meaning that the interventions put in place are responding positively.

Dr Bakyaita however noted that the risk factors are still present and that there is need to ensure zero record of Cholera cases.

‘’We shall use this time when the cases are lower to prepare better just in case we have new cases and also to mop up the remaining cases,” Dr Bakyaita said.

He said that the next phase should be to look at the available data to discover the driving factors and also where cases are remaining to have targeted interventions in those places.

Dr Bakyaita noted the need to improve the water infrastructure, waste management and adoption of good hygiene habits.

British High Commissioner to Zambia, Nicholas Woolley, also commended the efforts of the volunteers and health workers for their front-line efforts.

Mr Woolley said that the reduction in numbers from the first case to date, is evidence of the government commitment to effectively combat Cholera.

And United Nations Resident Coordinator, Beatrice Mutali said the UN family was happy to contain the epidemic.

Ms Mutali however noted the need to ensure that challenges of water and sanitation are addressed so that there is no re-occurrence of cholera.
