President Hichilema directs Ministry of Health to employ Volunteers assisting in Cholera treatment

President Hakainde Hichilema has directed that all Health volunteers who have been rendering a service in the cholera centres to be employed in the next Ministry of Health recruitment.

President Hichilema said this is to appreciate their efforts in the treatment, controlling and managing the cholera outbreak.

The Head of State noted that the process will be done in an orderly way and that there should be no change to the database of those that are volunteering.

The President wants fairness in this recruitment process so that everyone who has rendered a service is employed.

Speaking after a tour of the Cholera Treatment Center at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, President Hichilema called for unity in the country in an effort to navigate the disease.

President Hichilema stated that being appointed as the SADC Region Cholera Champion, Zambia needs to lead by example in the fight against the disease.

He appealed to all Zambians to support the current administration to fulfil its vision of improving the livelihoods of citizens.

He noted that a consultative approach will be undertaken in order to achieve the national agenda.

“This requires Zambians to bring cholera under control and get rid of it entirely so that we can set that as an example,” President Hichilema indicated.

And the President appreciated the support from stakeholders who through financial, material and human resources assistance have helped reduce the number of cases.

Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo noted that the government’s top priority has been managing the cholera outbreak.

Ms Masebo disclosed that in the last 24 hours, the country has recorded a total of 197 cholera cases.

Ms Masebo added that the largest treatment centre, Heroes National Stadium as of today, at 06 hours, had 112 patients admitted and has now remained with 65 patients in admission.

She disclosed that those in admission include 31 children and 34 adults, while five patients have been referred to the Levy Treatment Centre.

“We have not recorded any death at this facility for the past 10 days. Your excellency, this is the progress we have made over the past 4 weeks of us managing patients here,” Ms Masebo stated.
