Government has set Monday, July 1st, 2024 as burial date for the 11 Lundazi accident victims.

Acting Lundazi District Commissioner, Lloyd Daka says a mass funeral and a possible mass burial will be conducted for the victims adding that his office would ensure that the occasion ends successfully and dignified.

Mr Daka said a consultative meeting between government and the bereaved families has taken place.

He told ZANIS in an interview that government has proposed that a mass funeral be held at Vigodo grounds in the central business district.

Mr Daka  further pledged material support towards the funeral expenses until  burial.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the bereaved families, Martin Theo has appealed to government to allow mourners to bury their loved ones in their family burial sites as opposed to mass burial.

Mr. Theo said some bereaved  families objected to a mass burial for ethnic reasons.

” We have accepted to holding a mass funeral regardless of it being against our tradition. But we ask government to grant as the wish of taking our deceased family members to the family’s resting places”, Mr Theo pleaded.

11 people coming from Bwandila market perished when the vehicle they were traveling in lost control and failed to negotiate a curve, killing six on  the spot while five others later died in hospital due to injuries.
