Govt suspends Sino Metals operations

Government has suspended operations at Sino Metals Leach Zambia Limited in Chambeshi, Kalulushi District, following a tailings dam wall collapse that resulted in the discharge of acidic effluent into the Kafue River.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe, in a statement posted on his official facebook page and monitored by ZANIS , stated that he visited the mining firm alongside Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, party officials, and stakeholders to assess the extent of the environmental impact.

Mr. Kabuswe acknowledged the company’s prompt response in providing essential supplies to affected families but emphasized that operations will remain suspended until investigations are concluded and necessary safety measures are put in place.

He further stressed that all affected farmers and families will be duly compensated without fail.

The minister has since reassured the affected communities that President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration remains committed to securing their livelihoods and well-being.
