At least 15 farmers in Mapoma area of Kanchibiya District in Muchinga Province have lost their maize fields after a herd of buffaloes raided their crops over the weekend.

Mwinikashi Ward Councillor, Brian Bwalya said data is still being collected that will help to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Mr Bwalya has also called on stakeholders to support the affected farmers with materials needed for their survival.

“I can confirm that no life has been lost, however, the affected farmers need help,” he said.

And one of the affected farmers, Theresa Kafwanka explained that the ordeal left her and her family stunned when they found their maize field destroyed.

Meanwhile, District Livestock and Fisheries Coordinator, Daniel Ng’uni, said his department had not yet received any official communication regarding the animal attack.

Mr Ng’uni added that once the assessment is completed, relevant authorities such as the Member of Parliament, District Commissioner, and Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) will be informed for intervention.

“I encourage all councillors and community members to report such incidents to our department immediately so that we can respond quickly as a government,” he said
