President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting national unity by strengthening collaboration with traditional leaders.
Speaking in Bwengwa, where he met with 15 chiefs, ahead of the installation of Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland as Village Headwoman, the President emphasised that unity among traditional leaders is key to fostering peace and cohesion across Zambia.
President Hichilema said when traditional leaders across the country get united, that unity will translate into the unity of their subjects who form part of the country ‘s citizenry.
“This is what I want to see as President of this country, citizens of Zambia should feel at home in whichever part of the country they are, enjoying peace and unity as one people”, he emphasised.
He said misunderstandings will always be there but the goal should be to dialogue and resolve issues amicably.
“My Personal agenda is to unite the people of Zambia. When you unite as Chiefs’ subjects will unite then the issue of development can effectively be managed’’, he said.
Meanwhile, House of Chiefs Chairperson, Chief Nkambo has commended President Hichilema for recognising the vital role of tradition in governance.
Chief Nkambo noted that by bringing traditional leaders together, the President is not only respecting Zambia’s heritage but also creating a foundation for stronger national unity, as unity among chiefs will translate into a united citizenry.
And Chief Nalubamba of Namwala District in Southern Province also commended President Hichilema for his efforts in facilitating continued interaction among traditional leaders across the country.
He said Chiefs are now able to share ideas on development in the respective chiefdoms without government necessarily being the link.
Chief Nalubamba has however called for an amendment to the title of village headman to village head person to reflect gender inclusivity.
“We know your Government walks the talk, we feel the law is not sensitive on headman and recommend that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development works on amending the law to be gender inclusive,” he added.
