24-YEAR-OLD JAILED FOR BICYCLE THEFT IN CHISAMBA

The Chisamba resident Magistrate Suzen Magalashi has sentenced a 24-year-old man of Chibombo district to one-month imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a bicycle valued at K2000 from his employer.

Benson Mweemba of Kalola area in Chibombo who readily admitted the charge was convicted and sentenced yesterday.

ZANIS reports that this was after he was found guilty of theft by servant contrary to Section 272 and 278 of the penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence were that on 9th February, 2025, the accused being an employee of Tyson farm as a general worker, by virtue of his employment, did steal a bicycle valued at K2000, a property of his employer.

Facts are that on the material day Chrispin Mutubisha left the company bicycle at the farm but did not find it when he returned, hence, asked Keyson Mvula, a security guard who later followed the wheel print that led him to the accused person.

The court heard that Mweemba was later picked up and taken to the police together with the bicycle which he said he wanted to sell to raise money to buy food for his family.

Upon his own plea of guilty and admission of facts, Magistrate Magalashi found the accused guilty as charged and convicted him accordingly.

In mitigation Mweemba asked the court to exercise maximum lenience, saying he has children and is taking care of his mother who would suffer if he went to jail.

Magistrate Magalashi counselled the accused considering his mitigation being the first offender who did not waste time and sentenced him to one-month imprisonment with hard labour but suspended the sentence for twelve months on condition that he does not commit the same offence.
