GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO ERADICATE ILLEGAL MINING

The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illegal mining and formalising small-scale miners to enhance safety, environmental sustainability, and economic benefits.

Speaking in Parliament, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, emphasised that the government, under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, is taking decisive steps to address the negative impacts of illegal mining.

Mr Kabuswe explained that the government is facing challenges in formalising small-scale mining, particularly in safety and access to geological data adding that it is enhancing training programs and creating specialised manuals for artisanal miners.

“The government is finalising training manuals for artisanal and small-scale miners and working to provide geological data to curb illegal mining,” Mr Kabuswe stated.

He explained that formalising small-scale mining will benefit miners and the economy, and the government is supporting the move by granting licenses and integrating miners into cooperatives.

“These two market centres in Mumbwa and Rufunsa districts will provide a ready market for artisanal and small-scale miners involved in gold mining and trading activities, which will enhance access to fair markets for miners. This will help miners receive fair pricing, especially through Zambia Gold Limited, which will protect them from exploitation by middlemen,” he said.

He added that the government is strengthening regulations through stricter licensing, training, and cooperatives, while increased law enforcement collaboration and the new Minerals Regulation Commission Bill will enhance oversight.

“The commission is expected to contribute to the eradication of illegal mining through enhanced regulation of the industry,” said Mr Kabuswe.

Mr Kabuswe called for collective action from leaders and the public to combat illegal mining, emphasising that small-scale miners must operate within the law for the benefit of the country.
