District Commissioner, Lenox Shimwambwa has disclosed that about K15 million kwacha has been allocated as grants to empower youths who were illegally mining in lead contaminated mining areas like the black mountain.
Mr Shimwambwa says that the government, with support from cooperating partners has made positive strides in reducing lead pollution in affected areas like Makululu and Chowa compounds.
The District Commissioner was speaking in a speech read for him by District Administrative Officer, Stanford Petulo during the Kabwe Lead Pollution update meeting in Kabwe.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to addressing lead pollution in the district, Mr Shimwambwa added that about 1,200 residential areas in Makululu and Chowa were paved.
Meanwhile, various stakeholders have called for a government lead remediation to address the lead pollution in Kabwe district, stating that lead pollution is a violation against human rights.
