Economist, Kelvin Chisanga, has expressed optimism about the potential impact of the revival of Mulungushi Textiles on Zambia’s economy.
In an exclusive telephone interview with ZANIS, Mr Chisanga stated that the revival of Mulungushi Textiles will contribute to Zambia’s GDP growth and provide taxation revenue for the country.
Mr Chisanga explained that the textile industry is an important sector that can contribute to the country’s economic development and is crucial for protecting the country’s manufacturing output and promoting economic growth.
“The company will play a critical role in Zambia’s economic objectives and taxation revenue from the company will help the government attend to its obligations,” he said.
Mr Chisanga further explained the need to safeguard the textile industry from challenges in the market particularly the influx of second-hand clothes.
“We need to look at what type of clothes, especially second-hand clothes, come into the country and give the textile industry some protection,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that Mulungushi Textile’s products are competitively priced to compete with imported goods.
“If the clothes are going to be expensive or production is going to be more expensive than imported goods, it becomes a challenging factor,” Mr Chisanga noted.
He further noted that Kabwe town, being the host of Mulungushi Textiles will benefit positively in terms of local economic growth.
“Having an institution like Mulungushi Textiles will help people who will be employed, and at the household level, it will have a massive impact.
“Overall, the revival of Mulungushi Textiles is seen as a significant step towards promoting economic growth and development in Zambia,” he added.
