CHIEF MACHIYA DEMANDS COMPENSATION

Chief Machiya  of the Lamba speaking people in Mpongwe district on the Copperbelt has called on Sino Metals,  the Company responsible for polluting Kafue river,  to compensate the affected communities.

Chief Machiya says his subjects are failing to use the water for their daily chores because they are uncertain about the  high level of acid in the water.

He noted that most of the people who depended on fishing from the Kafue River for their livelihood have been affected because the fish died from the high acidic levels.

The Tradidtional ruler said this when the newly appointed Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Lawrence Mwanza paid a courtesy call on him.

“There is no fish in kafue River, therefore all the people in my community should be compensated,” Chief Machiya said.

The Pollution incident involving acidic effluent from Sino Metals tailing dam which burst recently destroyed crops from several farming fields for peasant farmers and  contaminated the Mwembeshi stream and the Kafue River.
