Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Collins Nzovu has acknowledged the critical water challenges in Luanshya District, citing outdated infrastructure and contamination of the Kafubu River as key concerns.
Mr Nzovu assured that government has prioritized the funding and completion of the Kafulafuta dam project to address the challenges.
Speaking during a working visit to the district, Mr Nzovu observed that Luanshya’s water system, initially designed for a much smaller population, is now overwhelmed by the district’s growing population.
He emphasized the urgent need to upgrade the aging water network to ensure reliable service delivery.
Mr Nzovu also raised alarm over the high levels of contamination in the Kafubu River, which has long been a primary water source for Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company.
He attributed the contamination to encroachment by residents and other human activities near the river.
“As we prepare to open the Kafulafuta Dam, I am urging both residents and the water utility company to ensure no settlements or plots are allowed near the dam to avoid the mistakes we’ve seen with the Kafubu River,” Mr. Nzovu said.
ZANIS reports that the Kafulafuta Dam is a multi-million-dollar water project set to provide clean water to over 17,000 residents across Luanshya, Mpongwe, Masaiti and Ndola districts.
The project, which includes maintenance costs, will address leaks in the existing network and ensure a more reliable water supply.
And Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company Director Paul Bilima said construction at the dam has progressed with test trials already underway.
“We have started running test trials, including pumping water to the Makoma Dam in Luanshya, and have identified some pipe leakages. However, the project includes provisions for maintenance, so we are confident these issues will be resolved,” he said.
Mr Njovu is in Luanshya district to commission the Kafubu water and sanitation regional office and appreciate the dewatering process at Luanshya Copper Mines shaft 28.
