Heavy rains have washed away six water crossing points in Chifwema and Malundu wards of Kafue District, leaving residents stranded and struggling to access essential services.
The heavy downpour caused widespread destruction in the area, including the destruction of the six water crossing points on Saturday 29 December 2024.
A check by Kafue District Commissioner Maurice Hikapulwe found that the crossing points had been washed away, cur off people from accessing social services like health services.
Mr. Hikapulwe stated that the washed away crossing points are crucial for residents to access markets, schools, and healthcare.
“From the heavy rains which we experienced on Saturday 6 water crossing points in Chifwema and Malundu wards of Kafue District have been washed off.
“Our people are cut off from accessing social amenities like Health facilities, and markets among others,” stated Mr. Hikapulwe
He stated that there is a need to assist the affected communities urgently.
Mr. Hikapulwe identified the washed-off crossing points as Nabwalya Bridge, Namalyata A Bridge, Fuzwe Bridge, Namoma Bridge, Namalyata B Bridge, and Kalubale Hill.
Meanwhile, in an interview with ZANIS, the representative of the affected Simon Kabwata, described the disaster as terrible.
Mr. Kabwata narrated that the Chilambila area is a basin surrounded by mountains and hills hence the development has not only deprived the people of a transport Network but also caused a threat to human safety.
“We are facing a huge challenge here, the crossing points are washed off and we are cut off from accessing medical care or buying food from the nearest points,” said Mr. Kabwata.
