THE Zambia Police Service has urged the public to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to fight the growing issue of unruly youths commonly known as junkies.
Zambia Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, says the police have increased patrols in affected areas and will continue to do so noting that they, however, require public support and cooperation especially when encountering police officers during patrols.
In an exclusive telephone interview with ZANIS in Lusaka, Mr Hamoonga emphasised the need to address the issue as it is a societal problem that requires collective effort.
He said parents in particular play a crucial role in raising law-abiding children who are less likely to become involved in unlawful acts.
Mr Hamoonga stated that while the police have made arrests and the courts have imposed fines, the problem persists hence stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to effectively address the issue.
“It’s essential to consider the causes of unlawful behaviours and implement strategies that promote prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation which might involve community-based initiatives and collaboration with local authorities,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He added that working with local authorities and providing rehabilitation alongside other support services, will help in addressing the issues of junkies around the country.
Mr Hamoonga explained that by adopting a multifaceted approach, the country can make progress in addressing the issue.
