PEMBA Town Council in Southern Province has outlined its plans to construct modern market infrastructure at Bbamp Market situated on the Batoka Maamba Road.
The project is funded through the Capital Grant under the Zambia Devolution Support Programme by the World Bank.
Pemba Council Secretary Samuel Chilombo said the infrastructure will include a water scheme to provide constant access to clean water within the market, solar-powered lighting to enable trading activities to continue until 20:00 hours.
Mr Chilombo noted that this will enhance security and modern ablution blocks to improve hygiene and sanitation for both traders and customers.
He said this in a statement issued to ZANIS that the proposed establishment of a modern market structure aimed at improving trading conditions for local marketeers.
Mr Chilombo said the funds for the market are available adding that immediately the council settles the land issues, works will begin.
“As a local authority we want to ensure traders have a modern market where to trade from by having running water and ablution blocks to improve hygiene in the town,” Mr Chilombo said.
Mr Chilombo emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between the council and the community to ensure the success of the project.
“We want to work with our people and deliver the necessary services that they need, collaborative efforts between us will bring about more massive development in trading places,” he said.
He assured the marketeers of the council’s commitment to enhancing their working environment and improving service delivery.
Mr Chilombo said the development is a step toward transforming the market into a modern and user-friendly trading space.
Earlier, the Council held a consultative meeting with the Bbamp Market Committee to discuss the proposed establishment of the Market.
