President Hichilema nods Zambia U.S cooperation

President Hakainde Hichilema has appreciated the support and cooperation from the US government in education, human rights, health and in the fight against corruption among others. 

President Hichilema said the two countries have enjoyed bilateral relations that have culminated into cooperation and support in a bid to uplift the plight of the Zambian people. 

The President said this when he received a delegation of senators from the US who paid a courtesy call on him at State House. 

And commenting on the US investments, President Hichilema said a lot of work has been done around the Lobito Corridor project.

President Hichilema said the speed at which the U.S is making decisions concerning the implementation of the Lobito Corridor is impressive.

He disclosed that the Lobito project involves the DRC Congo, Angola, Zambia and the United States.

President Hichilema said once the Lobito project is completed it will open up opportunities in the mining, tourism and agriculture sectors.

He explained that the area where the railway line will pass is endowed with abundant minerals and good climatic conditions for agriculture.

President Hichilema further indicated that government appreciates the important role that the US private sector plays as it endeavours to rebuild the country’s economy.

Mr Hichilema said the US private sector aligns itself well with the agenda of government of creating jobs for the citizens.

President Hichilema said government values the partnership that exists between Zambia and the US.

He said Zambia wants to see the partnership grow for many years to come for the benefit of its people. 

And speaking earlier on behalf of the visiting US delegation, US Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray informed President Hichilema that the team is in the country to discuss investments and how to further strengthen political, economic and security partnerships in the region. 

Ms Murray said she is impressed with the progress the US and Zambia is making in increasing access to education, improving food security and creating economic opportunities for all. 

She revealed that the US has invested over seven billion United States dollars since 2000 in public health, education and food security in Zambia. 

Ms Murray said the US delegation has seen positive results of the US investment made in Zambia.

Meanwhile, Ms Murray says the US is hopeful that the Lobito Corridor investment will enhance economic growth, strengthen sustainable supply chains and greatly benefit the Zambian people. 

She said the US is looking forward to discussing how the two countries can work together in building stronger ties and a bright future for its people. 

Ms Murray disclosed that the team is also visiting South Africa, Malawi, Angola and Botswana.
