The Chinese embassy  has donated  500,000 US dollars to the Ministry of Finance and National planning to support Zambia’s response to the cholera epidemic.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Chinese Embassy Charge’ d’ Affair Wanga Sheng says the donation is part of China’s effort to assist Zambia in the fight against cholera.

Mr. Wanga indicates that the amount donated is meant to help the government and people improve sanitation and water supply to avoid another outbreak.

Mr. Wang has expressed China’s solidarity with Zambia and has further emphasized the importance of effectively utilizing the funds toward the alleviation of the epidemic.

He said President Haikainde Hichilema and Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Du Xiaohui jointly held a press conference in January this year, on China’s support to Zambia in the fight against the disease announcing nine assistance measures including cash, constructing a clinic, medical and daily supplies and water supply projects among others.

He said the past months have seen China and Zambia working together to materialize the nine assistance measures to keep cholera under control.

“Today I am here to hand over the promised humanitarian assistance in cash, we are delighted to see that the cholera outbreak in Zambia has been alleviated, but its eradication remains a long term task.” He said

He has revealed that a Chinese vaccine manufacturer is working hard to explore the possibility of vaccine production in Zambia as a long term measure to prevent the recurrence of the outbreak of the cholera disease.

And Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane says Zambia has been battling with the cholera epidemic since October 2023 when two cases were first reported in Lusaka and since then, the country experienced an unfortunate surge in cases recorded, resulting in the spread to 71 districts across the country.

Dr. Musokotwane said through the government’s dedication and support from cooperating partners like China, the disease has been contained.
