UKA not registered as political party-Mwiimbu

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu says there is no record of registration for United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) as a political party or pressure group at the Registrar of Societies.

Mr Mwiimbu says previous events at the registrar of Societies indicate that there is no legal record of UKA’s existence.

He has disclosed this following several media queries on UKA’ status at the Registrar of Societies.

Mr Mwiimbu was speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today.

He said it is unfortunate that despite not being a registered entity, UKA has continued to portray itself as a legal entity.

Mr Mwiimbu stated that as far as the ministry is concerned, UKA remains an illegal society.

He has however, reiterated that the Ministry remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals as provided for under the constitution as well as freedom of association.

Mr Mwiimbu noted that citizens are able to express themselves freely because government has allowed for the democratic space in the country to expand.

He said claims by some individuals and associations that the democratic space in the country is shrinking are unfounded.

Mr Mwiimbu stated that government will not oppress anyone provided they do not breach the law.

He disclosed that it is on record at the Registrar of Societies that individuals bearing the names Sakwiba Sikota and Gibson Bwalya who tried to register an organisation under UKA failed to do so after failing to comply with the requirements provided for.

Mr Mwiimbu further said it is evident for Zambians to see that those making the assertions are on record of exercising their freedom of expression on social and other media platforms.

He has indicated that organisations that want to participate in the political discourse of the country are at liberty to do so provided they register with the relevant authorities.

Mr Mwiimbu has since advised UKA and any other associations wishing to engage in political activities to register as political parties and exercise their rights as such.
