Energy Expert, Bornface Zulu, has hailed ZESCO Limited for signing 29 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Independent Power Providers (IPPs) across the country. 

The Micro-Generator Scheme and Presidential Solar Initiative have facilitated the agreements which will add 332 megawatts of solar power to the national grid.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Zulu observed that the agreements will foster expansion in the energy sector, which will contribute positively to Zambia’s energy security, currently struggling. 

Mr Zulu noted that the country needs every type of power generation it can get in order to stabilise the national grid. 

He noted that Zambia’s dependence on hydroelectric power makes it vulnerable to fluctuations in energy supply.

Mr Zulu added that bringing alternative sources of energy into the mix will contribute to economic development and ensure a stable energy grid in the long run.

He pointed out that the benefits of expanding the energy sector go beyond energy security, adding that providing electricity strengthens the economy by increasing productivity in industries and reducing downtime hours.

“With the signing of the 29 PPAs, Zambia is poised to take a significant leap forward in its energy development,” he said.

Mr Zulu added that the agreements are expected to contribute to the growth of the energy sector and have a positive impact on the economy.
