THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has commenced drilling four solar – powered boreholes in Chisamba district in Central Province.
Chisamba District Commissioner Joel Mboyoma states that some parts of the district are experiencing water scarcity due to the drought the country experienced in the previous rainy season.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Mr. Mboyoma said the boreholes are being sunk at three learning institutions and Chief Chamuka ‘s palace of the Lenje speaking people.
“The project is aimed at alleviating the difficulties in accessing water that the area is facing following the drought we experienced.
“The selected points are Chikonkomene, Mupelekese and Kasosolo Primary Schools and Chief Chamuka’s palace,” he said.
Mr. Mboyoma explained that the boreholes will be accessible to all community members to access clean and safe drinking water.
He added that the project is one of the interventions the government has put in place to aid vulnerable communities that were adversely affected by the El Niño induced drought.
And Chisamba District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Samuel Kunda noted that the project will promote sanitation and hygiene in beneficiary schools.
Mr. Kaunda stated that the development will thereby make the learning institutions more conducive for learning.
“The challenges we have been facing in accessing clean and safe drinking water in these schools will now be a thing of the past. This will promote learners and staff retention in beneficiary institutions,” he said.
Mr. Kunda added that access to clean water will also enhance menstrual hygiene among the girls thereby making the schools habitable for them.
