President Hichilema in Kenya to attend AU summit

President Hakainde Hichilema has arrived in Nairobi, Kenya where he is scheduled to attend an African Union Heads of State and Government Africa Fertiliser and Soil Health Summit at Kenya International Conference Centre tomorrow.

ZANIS reports that President Hichilema’s official visit to Kenya is at the invitation of his Kenyan counterpart Dr William Ruto.

The Head of State arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport this afternoon.

President Hichilema is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders and heads of key international organisations, to discuss various issues affecting the region and the globe.

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, says the Summit organised by the African Union is an important undertaking.

He added that the summit provides a platform for Africa to look at the best practice in terms of the use of fertiliser, improving soil health as well as crop yields to ensure food security at both national, continental and global levels.

“Climate change has had a significant effect on Zambia and the African continent as a whole on food security and crop production, so this is a good innovation for us to see how best we can improve in that area,” he said.

Mr Mulambo stated that Zambia is currently experiencing a drought which has threatened food security, hence making such initiatives important.

“We in Zambia, we are facing a drought now as a result of climate change so any innovation that can be used to assist in  ensuring that crop yield is improved can of course be very important for us,” he stressed.

President Hichilema is expected to return to Zambia immediately after his engagements.
