ZIA concerned with quality of CDF projects

The Zambia Institute of Architects (ZIA)has expressed concern with the quality of structures being constructed in most parts of the country using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

ZIA President Fidelis Kabwiri said most of the structures currently being constructed do not meet the basic standards, have questionable durability and pose a threat to the safety of the people.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Kabwiri added that while it is commendable for government to increase the CDF allocation, it is also critical that the structures are constructed in consultation with experts to assure their durability, safety and quality measures.

Mr Kabwiri recommended that proper planning of the structures is conducted to accommodate other structural plans as well as expansion plans.

He added that the institute is ready to work with government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the local councils to provide guidance from planning stage to construction.

And speaking during the same briefing, ZIA Vice president Paul Makasa stated that most local authorities lack the architectural expertise to properly assess proposals and plans for the constructions, which could likely compromise the standards of the buildings.

He said the institute can help to build capacity for the local authorities so that they get value for their money.
