Govt vaccinates over 20,000 cattle against foot and mouth disease

Government has vaccinated twenty one thousand, four hundred and five cattle against foot and mouth disease in Shangombo District.

This comes after an outbreak of the disease in Mboyiwa which spread to Shalitata in Simu ward. 

District Livestock Officer, Morris Mudenda told ZANIS today that the ministry has vaccinated cattle in Shangombo Central, Sipuma, Siwelewele, Mambolomoka and Natukoma veterinary camps. 

“In Shangombo central we vaccinated about 6,227 cattle, in Sipuma we vaccinated about 2,135, in Siwelewele about 7,415 were vaccinated, in Mambolomoka we vaccinated 4,620 cattle and finally in Natukoma we vaccinated about 1,008 cattle,”Mr Mudenda said. 

Mr Mudenda further said that the total allocation of vaccination is twenty three thousand three hundred.

Meanwhile, District Livestock and Fisheries Coordinator, Charles Zulu has confirmed the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Mboyiwa and that vaccinations have been done to curb it.

The type of vaccination done is called ring vaccination which is done in the area of an outbreak and surrounding areas to prevent the disease from spreading.
