Government has embarked on the rehabilitation of agriculture extension camp houses in Luwingu District.
Luwingu District Agricultural Coordinator (DACO) Victor Ndhlovu confirms that the works will make the houses habitable.
Speaking when he made a presenting during the 4th quarter District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) meeting held at the council chamber yesterday, Mr. Ndhlovu said among the camp extension houses being rehabilitated by MEGOHMS Limited include Malekani, Shimumbi and Luena in Senior Chief Shimumbi in Luwingu District.
He said the three houses will cost the government K 300, 000 in order to make them habitable.
“These are among the houses which were constructed way back in colonial era and working on them will make them habitable,” he added.
The Mucheleka camp house has been rehabilitated at the cost of 100,000 Kwacha while Malekani, Shimumbi and Luena have reached advanced stages.
He also reported that there is a critical shortage of maize storage space at the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to store maize bought from peasant farmers in Luwingu District.
Mr. Ndhlovu said the Food Reserve Agency is housing maize bought from Chilubi, Lupososhi and Luwingu Districts making space not enough.
He appealed to the government to finish the construction works which it embarked on at the FRA main shed to increase space.
Meanwhile the DACO has expressed displeasure with certain farmers who accessed inputs under the Fertilizer Input Support Programme (FISP) for not selling their produce to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
He explained that peasant farmers who accessed FISP were told to sell their agricultural produce to FRA but to the surprise some farmers opted to sell the produce to briefcase buyers who invaded the district.
On rabies outbreak, Mr. Ndhlovu reported that the Department of Veterinary has vaccinated 1064 dogs from July to November 2024.
He said all dogs’ owners must ensure that pets are vaccinated if the district is to overcome the spread of rabies.
