Residents of Kamwanya area in Chimwemwe Township, Kitwe District, Copperbelt Province, have raised concerns over the increasing number of bars in their neighborhood.
Residents have expressed their frustration to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) complaining that the growing liquor businesses in the locality is causing unwarranted congestion in the area.
They said reports of individuals consuming alcohol and occupying private yards have further fueled discontent among the community, causing disturbances.
Parents in the area are particularly concerned about the impact of the noise and activities on their children’s daily routines, creating an uncomfortable environment for families.
Brenda Chibwe, a long-time resident, described the situation as frustrating, especially for families with young children.
“The noise is unbearable, and people are often drinking in yards or on the streets. It’s not only disturbing but also unsafe,” Hilda Shepe, another resident said.
In response to the complaints, Acting Public Relations Officer Kafula Mutale addressed the matter, underscoring the legal requirements for liquor businesses.
She noted that bar operators are required to obtain the necessary clearances from relevant authorities, and also adhere to noise regulations and operating hours.
Ms. Mutale also urged business owners to comply with the law to avoid penalties or closures.
She encouraged residents to report any disturbances to the relevant authorities to maintain safety and harmony within the community.
