Government has called for stakeholders’ engagement in mitigating the impact of climate change in the country.
Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Moonze says there is an urgent need for government, traditional leadership and donors, among others, to jointly find mitigation measures against the ongoing drought situation in the province and the rest of the country.
Speaking today during a Provincial Disaster Management Committee PDMC meeting in Siavonga, Dr. Monze said these measures will help address delay in accessing FRA maize for sale, issues of theft among others.
Dr Moonze said despite communities’ ongoing concerns that the maize is available in the shades, accessing the commodity has been challenging as it has prolonged for more than a month in other districts.
“Government wants to ensure that food is readily accessible and available to everyone. I encourage the district to capitalise on capturing people that are vulnerable and ensure that people access the commodity without delay,’’ he told the meeting.
ZANIS reports that the team is in the district to monitor various disaster satellite management committees.
The meeting brought together officials from the Department of Community Development and Social Welfare, Health, DMMU, the local authority, and the Food Reserve Agency FRA, among others, to discuss the ongoing drought response and assess the effectiveness of the response plan.
