Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Henry Mukungule says President Hakainde Hichilema has remained committed to issues of disabilities.
The issuance of Cabinet circular No:30 of 2024 on accessibility issues and the meeting with persons with disabilities which was held at State House recently are some of the notable commitments by President Hichilema’s administration.
Speaking yesterday during the Provincial Accessibility awareness raising meeting held at the Provincial Administration boardroom in Muchinga Province, Mr Mukungule said the President’s commitment to these issues is notable.
“We need to recognise that they are the experts in their own lives and that their experiences and perspectives are highly vital,” he said.
Mr Mukungule further encouraged stakeholders who attended the meeting to ensure they adhere to the six months ultimatum given to all through the Cabinet circular No: 30 of 2024 to make their offices more accessible.
And Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) Provincial Coordinator Derrick Malama stated that accessibility is not just about ramps and elevators but about creating an environment that is usable by everyone.
“It’s about breaking down barriers and providing equal opportunities for all,” Mr Malama adds.
He charged during the meeting that accessing public facilities such as public restrooms are often a daunting task for persons with disabilities.
Mr Malama said for this reason his department will continue inspecting various public institutions to ensure they are more accessible.
The meeting was attended by selected departments in the province.
