North-west farmers told to adopt smart agric

Kasempa Town Council Chairperson Brain Kakonkanya has challenged farmers to adopt climate smart agricultural practices to enhance food production and income generation.

Mr Kakonkanya says the government attaches great importance to the agricultural sector and seeks to raise productivity and ensure every household is food secured.

Mr. Kakonkanya said the agricultural sector remains critical to the country’s economic development.

He was speaking to ZANIS news in Kasempa district during the official opening of the 2024 Kasempa Agriculture Show that is being held under the theme: “Creating a competitive future”.

Mr. Kakonkanya said that the agriculture show is an important event as it helps to boost businesses and create job opportunities for the locals.

“I wish to bring to your attention that the government’s aim for the farmer input programme will continue to be based on the need to provide affordable agriculture inputs to vulnerable but viable small-scale farmers,” He said.

The Council Chairperson said the government has put in measures to mitigate the current hunger situation in the country by providing maize for food for work.

“The government is spearheading the cultivation of winter maize through the ministry of community and social development and also the government is taking measures to mitigate the current hunger situation in the country by providing maize for food for work in Kasempa district,” Mr. Kakonkanya said.

He further disclosed that the government is also constructing an aquaculture service center at kivuku and the park has the capacity of producing 10 tons of table size fish per year and furthermore, the center will be offering practical fish farming trainings.
