MEDIA CAUTIONED ON CHILDREN’S CODE ACT REPORTING

GENERATION Alive has called on media institutions to acquaint themselves with children’s code act and marriage (amendment) act laws.

Generational Alive Executive Director, Womba Wanki emphasized the importance of the media in promoting awareness and understanding of the laws that govern child protection and marriage.

ZANIS reports that speaking at the media breakfast, Ms Wanki urged media institutions to take an active role in shaping public opinion and promoting positive change.

She also highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of children and how the media can report on child marriage cases responsibly.

“As a society, it is our responsibility to ensure that children are protected from harm and exploitation,” Ms Wanki said.

And National Prosecution Authority, Senior State Advocate under the Gender Based Sexual Violence Unit, Monde Chizongo, highlighted the provisions of the Children’s Code Act, which aims at protecting children from exploitation, abuse and neglect.

Ms Chizongo explained that the law prohibits marriage under the age of 18 and sets out the requirements for marriage, including the need for consent from both parties.

She further disclosed the legal implications for child protection and marriage, emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together to ensure that children are protected from harm and exploitation.
