LAW FIRMS IN NWP URGED TO TAKE UP PRO BONO CASES

NORTH-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Luckson Mulumbi has called on law firms in the Province to take up more Pro Bono cases as a way of giving back to the community.

Speaking during the official opening of Equitas Legal Practitioners office in Solwezi, Mr Mulumbi said there are many people in need of legal representation in the community but are lacking the resources.

“As Law Association of Zambia, we know you guys do these pro bono cases for all lawyers, I think it should be one or two cases per year, we hope that Equitas even here in North-Western Province should be able to support many of our people in the communities,” Mr Mulumbi said.

He said Government will continue promoting access to justice for all citizens regardless of their social economic status by establishing community based justice centers, promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and increasing funding for legal aid programmes.

Mr Mulumbi noted that the government remained committed to upholding the rule of law, supporting the independence of the Judiciary and promoting justice for all.

“We cannot build an equal and just society without access to legal services, and therefore we are very glad that today we are witnessing the launch of this firm,” Mr Mulumbi said.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary further stated that the government will continue to strengthen the judiciary by increasing funding, improving infrastructure and promoting the use of technology to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of justice.

Speaking at the same function, Solwezi Mayor Remmy Kalepa, said law firms play a critical role in empowering individuals, businesses and institutions to navigate complex legal environments.

Mr Kalepa expressed gladness with the establishment of the new legal firm as it is evidence of the confidence that professionals have in the district.

“As Mayor I take pride in seeing our district attract and nurture enterprises like that of legal practitioners,” Mr Kalepa stated.

Additionally, Solwezi District Administrative Officer, Anthony Fulwe, who spoke on behalf of the district commissioner said the provision of quality legal services will contribute to the economic growth and social development of the community.

Meanwhile, managing partner for Equitas legal practitioner, Lungisani Zulu, said Equitas Legal Practitioners will continue providing pro bono services in Solwezi as they have been doing in Lusaka.

Mr Zulu said the law firm will continue meeting the demand placed on the legal profession for access to justice.
