Manyinga District Commissioner Brenda Mukwakwa says his district is making progress in the distribution of the 126 metric tonnes of relief maize.
Ms Mukwakwa says the distribution exercise is aimed at alleviating hunger following the prolonged dry spell during the 2023-2024 farming season the country experienced.
Speaking when she graced the ceremony , Mrs Mukwakwa said the relief food distribution exercise is also being done in partnership with the Zambia Red Cross Society.
“The Red Cross Society in the district , a non-governmental organization contracted by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), is making significant progress in distributing 126 metric tonnes of maize in the area, “ she said.
So far 1,260 by 50 kilogram bags of maize have been distributed to eligible beneficiaries among them 1,008 bags allocated for the food-for-work program while 252 by 50 kg bags are for free food distribution.
And Enock Ding’ombi, District Red Cross Society president stated that the distribution exercise is progressing well.
Mr Ding’ombi said the organization has successfully distributed maize in nine wards adding that plans to cover the remaining five wards are underway soon.
The DMMU recently allocated the 126 metric tonnes of maize to Manyinga district to mitigate hunger caused by the adverse weather conditions during the 2023,-2024 farming season.
