GOVERNMENT has thanked Guide us Foundation for donating essential items to Chainama Hills Mental Hospital in Lusaka.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Kennedy Lishimpi says partners such as Guide us Foundation should be commended for supplementing the government’s efforts in improving health care services in the country.
Dr Lishimpi explains that mental hospitals play a vital role in providing specialised care and treatment to individuals with mental health conditions hence the need for concerted efforts.
ZANIS reports that the PS said this in a speech read for him by Chainama Hills National Mental Health Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent, Margaret Chibowa during the handover of essential items on Friday.
“Unfortunately mental health issues often carry a stigma which leads to social isolation, discrimination and inadequate care,” he said.
Dr Lishimpi highlighted that the donations made would provide comfort and support to the patients at the hospital.
He emphasised that mental health should be taken seriously as it can affect anyone.
Meanwhile, Guide Us Foundation Executive Director, Victor Lilanda said the foundation aligns with global initiatives in promoting global mental health awareness to reduce stigma and increase access to quality care.
“Today we gather to shine a light on our brothers and sisters reminding us of the spirit of compassion and unity that defines us as a community,” he said.
Mr Lilanda said that the donations made were worth K20,000 and were in view of the festive season with the aim to show love to the mentally challenged individuals.
He thanked the hospital staff for their dedication and hard work.
