A Choma based retired Banker Oritah Musanka has lost about K939,886 retirement benefits that were saved in Indo Zambia bank.
It is alleged that unknown people accessed her account through her Zamtel mobile money and withdrew the said amount.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police Auxensio Daka explains that Choma Police Station received a report in which Oritah Munsaka aged 53 of Mochipapa Compound reported that on 19th December, 2024 between 15:00 hours and 19:00 hours unknown persons did replace her Zamtel phone number and managed to access her two INDO Zambia Bank account and stole money amounting to K939,886.
Mr Daka said this today in a statement availed to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Choma.
Brief facts of the matter are that the complainant, who is a retired banker, was accessing her monies through mobile banking using a Zamtel number as well as through the ATM and over the counter withdrawals.
Unfortunately, last month on unknown dates, she accessed her account and withdrew some money from her account leaving a balance of K917,467 in one account and K22,399.01 in the other account.
Mr Daka added that the complainant had left her phone on charger which had the Zamtel sim card that links her two bank accounts.
But around 20:00 hours when she went to unplug the phone from the charger she saw a message from Zamtel stating that her sim card had been successfully registered.
However, there was no network for Zamtel and that got her worried.
“On 19th December 2024 at around 18:00 hours the complainant left her phone which had the Zamtel sim card linked to her two bank accounts on the charger. At around 20:00 hours when she went to unplug the phone from the charger she saw a message from Zamtel stating that her sim card had been successfully registered. However, there was no network for Zamtel and that got her worried. The following day on 20th December 2024 she went to Zamtel Choma branch where she was told to replace her sim card and she did so after which she checked the bank balances for the two accounts and she discovered that there was no money in them,” Mr Daka said.
The complainant upon noticing that there was no money in her account she rushed to Indo Zambia Bank Choma Branch where she was told that her money was withdrawn on 19th December, 2024 between 15:00 hours and 20:00hrs using her Zamtel number.
The Commissioner also said Police have since instituted investigations and that no stone will be left unturned.
“Investigations into the matter have been instituted and as Police we will leave no stone unturned in order to bring the culprit to book,” Mr. Daka said.
