Police gun down lions terrorizing Zambezi district

The Zambia Police Service  have successfully killed two stray lions that were wreaking havoc and causing fear among the residents of Zambezi district in North-Western Province.

The lions are suspected to have migrated into Zambezi district from Kafue National Park in Western Province.

Recently, the lions killed four castle that were hooked to the oxcart carrying a patient to Zambezi district hospital. 

The incident is believed to have happened at Kaumbu area near Chiseji in Zambezi West.

Speaking to Zambia News and Information Services, District Commissioner Simeon Machayi, confirmed the killing of the two lions, providing reassurance to the community that they are now free from the threat posed by the lions. 

Mr Machayi revealed that the presence of the lions resulted in the loss of 16 cattle and three dogs across three different locations, leaving a trail of livestock carcasses in their wake.

And school authorities and learners expressed their happiness and gratitude, saying that they can now return to their daily routines without the looming shadow of danger hanging over them. 

Jacob Kayelu, a teacher at Mapachi secondary school, said he is grateful to the government and that the teachers and pupils are happy that the beats that caused school closures are now dead.

Meanwhile, Zambezi residents said they are happy with the government’s quick intervention in preventing the loss of lives among the community.

Patrick Kafumbu, one of the residents said the successful operation by the Zambia Police must be commendable, adding that the presence of the lions in the district had brought fear and commotion among the communities, the situation he described as a nightmare for the district.
