Yango Drivers petition against exploitation

Online taxi drivers have appealed  to government to intervene in the alleged exploitation by platforms offering the service.

The drivers want the Government to compel the companies to address the security concerns of the drivers following the recent spate of drivers being murdered in mysterious circumstances.

The drivers, who predominantly work for Yango, also want the current administration to also intervene in the low fares of taxi rides.

Presenting their petition over the matter to Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Zulu , the drivers complained that they have made numerous attempts to engage the companies but their plight has fallen on deaf ears.

The online taxi drivers have complained of low rates which do not correspond with factors such as inflation and increments in the price of fuel.

The petition was presented to the District Commissioner by Zambia Online Drivers Association President Lucas Chanda.

And Lusaka District Commissioner Rosa Zulu emphasized to the drivers that government’s main interest is for the drivers to be protected.

She assured them that she will escalate the matter to higher authorities for possible intervention.

Ms Zulu said the matter required her to seek an audience with different Ministries who would handle the cross cutting nature of the problems the drivers face.

She promised that her office would exhaust all possible channels of resolution until an amicable conclusion is reached.
