Kasama driver jailed for causing death

A 35-year-old man from Mbala district has been sentenced to 1 year simple imprisonment for causing death by dangerous driving in Mbala district.

This is a case in which Dickson Mumba was charged with eight counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Particulars of the offence are that Mumba, on August 18, 2023, while driving a vehicle, caused the deaths of eight people on the Mbala-Nakonde road, contrary to Section 161(1) of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2022 of the Laws of Zambia.

The convict was driving a Mitsubishi Fuso fighter with registration number AID 8600 at the time of the accident.

Mumba appeared before, in Charge Zulu, for sentencing.

And when passing judgement, Kasama High Court Judge Matthews Zulu considered the mitigation that was offered on his behalf by his lawyers and that he is the first offender and deserves leniency from the court.

Judge Zulu, however, sentenced Mumba to 1-year simple imprisonment with respect to each of the eight counts.
