Nakonde Cholera cases rise to 10

Cholera cases in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province has risen from seven to ten as of this morning.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial Health Director, David Silweya, has disclosed the development this morning when he and the Provincial Permanent Secretary, Henry Mukungule, paid a courtesy call on Nakonde District Commissioner, Marvelous Sikapizya.

Dr Silweya explained that two more cholera cases after an announcement of the seven cases during a briefing in Lusaka yesterday by the Acting Minister of Health, Douglas Syakalima, were recorded adding that this morning another case was recorded making it 10 cases.

Dr Silweya stated that the Ministry of Health is doing everything possible to ensure the disease is contained.

Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary, Henry Mukungule, has commended the health personnel in the province for their quick response to ensure that the disease is controlled.

Mr Mukungule further called for concerted efforts to tackle the rising cholera cases in the district before it spreads to other districts in the province and the country at large.

The Provincial Permanent Secretary further called on the Ministry of Health to continue monitoring and implementing measures to contain the disease.

“We can defeat cholera if we take measures seriously to avoid contracting the disease within the communities in our district,” he stressed.

Mr Mukungule has since urged citizens to adhere to the guidelines given by health authorities.

And the Disaster Management Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has donated assorted items in a bid to curb the cholera outbreak in the district.

Muchinga Province DMMU Regional Coordinator, Micheal Muyoba, named some of the items as hand washing soap, water containers, liquid chlorine and cholera tents among others.

Later, Mr Mukungule and his delegation visited the cholera isolation center at Nakonde Urban Clinic where he encouraged health personnel taking care of the patients to continue performing their duties diligently.

The Acting Minister of Health, Douglas Syakalima, is today expected to arrive in Nakonde to check on the cholera situation.
