Flash floods expected in some parts of the country

The Zambia Meteorological Department has cited Mulobezi, Namwala, Kalomo, Choma, Mazabuka, Monze, Livingstone and Kazungula as districts at high risk of flash flooding.

Other districts include Zimba, Mwense, Luwingu, Mwansabombwe, Kawambwa and surrounding areas.

Solwezi, Mushindamo, Nchelenge, Kaputa, Chingola, Chililabombwe, Kalulushi, Kitwe, Mufulira, Lufwanyama and surrounding areas are at medium risk of experiencing flash flooding.

ZANIS reports that this is according to the latest Flash-Floods/Floods Monitor issued by the Meteorological Department.

Mansa, Samfya, Mwinilunga, Kasempa, Luanshya, Mpongwe, Ndola, Chembe, Kapiri Mposhi, Kabwe, Mumbwa and the surrounding areas are at low risk of experiencing flash flooding.

The department attributed the flash flooding anticipated in the named regions due to the rainfall activities that has persisted for the past 24 hours.

This is projected to continue for the next 12 to 24 hours over much of the country with a high chance of heavy falls.

The department attributed the flash floods, flooding and waterlogging anticipated in higher risk regions due to the amounts of rainfall received and higher saturated levels of soil moisture.

Members of the public have since been cautioned to avoid flooded areas, streams and rivers and driving in flooded areas during heavy falls.
