An abandoned 1 by 3 classroom block at Kunda-mfumu Secondary School in Chembe District has angered the government.
The contractor engaged has left the construction site and abandoned the project, despite being paid an advance of K250, 000 for mobilization and commencement of the works.
ZANIS reports that this came to light when Chembe Member of Parliament, Cliff Mpundu monitored progress on the construction of the classroom block which has stalled at foundation level.
Mr Mpundu was especially irked to discover that despite being provided with an advance payment, the contractor, Tripple V Property Investments Limited, has deserted the site without any communication.
Mr Mpundu warned that government will not entertain contractors that have no capacity to deliver but come intent to dupe the residents of Chembe.
The area MP has since directed the local authority to write to the contractor with an ultimatum to resume works on site failure to which the contract will be terminated.
Mr Mpundu advised the local authority to promptly engage another contractor to execute the project if the current contract is terminated.
The law maker further urged the local authority to award contracts to contractors that have proved that they can diligently execute the works on time.
And Chembe Town Council Director of Engineering, Hastings Gondwe informed the MP that the local authority has tried to engage the contractor but to no avail.
The project was being undertaken with funds taken from the Constituency Development Funds (CDF)
